Course Description

This dynamic course, sponsored by the National Prevention Science Coalition to Improve Lives, is designed for K-12 school and mental health leaders committed to fostering prosocial, thriving school environments. Delivered asynchronously, the course comprises four in-depth modules, each concluding with a quiz to reinforce the skills and knowledge gained.

The course is co-facilitated by Jonathan Cohen, Ph. D., a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst with over 35 years of experience in K-12 schools, and Phil Brown, Ph. D., who has managed student support and prevention services in Pennsylvania and New Jersey state health and education agencies for 20 years. 

Guest speakers, including Professor Ben Lovett, Michael Greene, Ph.D., and Andrea Pulskamp, further enhance the learning experience, offering diverse perspectives on applying course concepts in educational settings. 

Participants will also learn practical strategies for utilizing school climate data to increase engagement and implement evidence-based violence prevention planning, equipping them to drive positive change in their schools.

Instructor(s)

Instructor Philip M. Brown, PhD.

Following a 20-year career managing student support and prevention services in Pennsylvania and New Jersey state health and education agencies, Dr. Brown served as a Senior Consultant for the National School Climate Center. He is a Fellow of the Center for Applied Psychology at Rutgers University, where he created and directed the Center for Social and Character Development, conducting research for the U.S. Department of Education on social, emotional, and character development programs. He served as the past president of the International Center for Assault Prevention. He founded two professional organizations: the New Jersey Alliance for Social, Emotional, and Character Development and the Commonwealth Prevention Alliance in Pennsylvania. He is the author of numerous government publications, journal articles, book chapters, and two books, the two-volume Handbook of Prosocial Education (2012), to which he contributed and edited, and School Discipline: A Prosocial Perspective (2016).

Instructor Jonathan Cohen, Ph.D.

Jonathan Cohen, Ph.D., received his doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the City University of New York. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry and psychology at New York Hospital, Cornell Medical Center. He has learned and worked in a number of Centers, including being an Adjunct Professor in Psychology and Education at Teachers College, Columbia University (1980 to 2023); Co-founder and President-Emeritus, National School Climate Center (1996-2017); and, Co-president of the International Observatory for School Climate and Violence Prevention (2018 - 2023). He is a Diplomate in Clinical Psychology, American Board of Professional Psychology and, a practicing clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst. Jonathan has worked in and with K-12 schools for over thirty-five years as a teacher, program developer, school psychologist, researcher, consultant, psycho-educational diagnostician and mental health provider. He has authored over 125 peer-reviewed articles, chapters, and a dozen books and monographs. His books include the award-winning Educating Minds and Hearts: Social Emotional Learning and the Passage Into Adolescence. (1999); Caring Classrooms/ Intelligent Schools: The Social Emotional Education of Young Children (2001); and Feeling Safe in School: Bullying and Violence Prevention Around the World (2020), co-authored and co-edited with Dorothy Espelage. He consults with schools, districts, State Departments of Education, foreign educational ministries, the World Bank, and UNICEF’s Child-Friendly Schools program about a range of social, emotional, and character development informed learning, risk prevention/health promotion, and school climate reform efforts.
