Course Description

This 3 module continuing education course gives mental health professionals a clear, practical introduction to assessing and treating eating disorders. The first module builds a strong foundation, covering core concepts such as etiology, epidemiology, and key risk factors. The second module moves into assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning, with a focus on evidence-based interventions and appropriate levels of care. The final module addresses special topics, including eating disorders in men, considerations for marginalized populations, alternative and adjunctive treatments, and the impact of weight-loss medications. By the end of the course, participants will have a deeper understanding of the complexity of eating disorders and concrete strategies they can apply directly in clinical practice.

Counseling Psychologist Michele Ford, Ph.D.

Dr. Michele Patterson Ford is a licensed psychologist, senior lecturer, and current chair of the Department of Psychology at Dickinson College. She earned her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Texas Tech University and brings over two decades of experience in clinical practice and higher education. Dr. Ford specializes in clinical and counseling psychology with a focus on disordered eating, body image, and psychological assessment. In addition to teaching a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses, she maintains a private practice and consults for behavioral health organizations. An engaged campus leader and mentor, Dr. Ford has served on numerous college committees and has advised students and organizations. Her insights have been featured in national media outlets including The Washington Post, Good Housekeeping, and U.S. News & World Report. She is also a frequent invited speaker on topics related to mental health, self-care, and psychological wellness.
